Videos for Students – Learn English, Canadian Culture, Develop Vocabulary and Speaking Skills

Hello everyone. On this page I am sharing some videos that I like that are useful for students learning English and for anyone new to Canada. Please excuse the long title but I thought it important to have wide ranging topics on this list but to coalesce (come together) around a few uniting elements.

First of all, the commonality is that many of these videos are about learning English and many are about Canadian culture, history and society. For example, a Quebecois woman published a great video discussing the rising patriotism among the people of Quebec, many of whom, prior to 2025, were probably most interested in Quebec nationalism. It’s fascinating to listen to her. On a related note, understanding different points of view and hearing different accents can be an asset when studying language and culture.

Secondly my focus is often helping students with their speaking and communication, so a large number of videos on this page are about speaking, pronunciation and accent reduction. Of specific note are videos about reductions, contractions and other aspects of regular everyday speech. Learning to communicate in smooth English with its intonation and emphasis on key words is important. So I have included videos on these core topics related to speaking.

Lastly some videos are related to vocabulary and grammar. Building the essentials and foundation is important too. That’s why I include the video from the Canadian discussing common acronyms (abbreviations). You always need to focus some time on vocabulary acquisition and grammar to ensure your English doesn’t fossilize (get stuck and have you relying on basic skills).

Note: this list may change over time so check back for new items!

Thank you and good luck with your studies. Contact me any time to chat about my availability for teaching and tutoring.
